I recently ventured east-side for my dinner and for a catch up with a fellow blogger. This was our first visit to The Magnum, and neither of us had even really explored the little area below Queen Street in the New Town area of Edinburgh. On the corner of Albany Street sits a cosy little restaurant adorned in fairy lights (which I absolutely love) who boast a menu option: ‘sausage of the month’. I was eager to enter and eat!
The menu is very straightforward – you’re not overloaded with options but there is a great variety of dishes to choose from.
Cullen Skink is a meal in itself for me. I find people who order it as a starter very brave! I had a little taste and it was really well flavoured. Lovely chunky pieces of haddock and potato in a beautifully flavoured cream soup.
Goats Cheese with Red, Golden & Candy-stripe Beetroot, Coriander Cress & Balsamic Reduction
This goats cheese was absolutely beautiful – the most deliciously creamy yet light goats cheese I think I’ve tasted. Beetroot and goats cheese are a perfect match and I’ve tasted a similar dish before so I knew I’d like it! The portions of goats cheese were so generous, I’d only complain that the beetroot portion could’ve been slightly more genernous. Or maybe I’m greedy!
‘Sausage of the day’ – Smoked Beef & Caramelised Onion Sausage
Sausage of the day was a really beautiful smoked beef and caramelised onion effort. They serve the sausages splashed with a really rich and luxurious red onion jus, and with mash and green beans wrapped in proscuitto on the side. It was both rich and luxurious, but easy and comforting to eat.
Pan Seared Fillet of Stone Bass with Lemon & Tomato Beurre Blanc, Romesco Florets & Squid Ink Tagliatelle
This was absolutely delicious and such a fresh tasting dish. I had to google stone bass – it appears to be the ugly cousin of seabass! In terms of food, it’s the chunky meaty cousin of seabass! The fish was served with the skin nice and crispy on top of squid ink pasta in a buttery citrus sauce. I was really tasty and deceptively filling!
The girls who served us were all really friendly and chatty, so we had a really wonderful experience here. Between the ambiance of the restaurant, friendliness of the staff and the caliber of the food, I’d definitely recommend Magnum!
